How Much Does Thinkific Really Cost? Subscription, Processing Fees, Apps, and Taxes

The plan price is only the first line of a Thinkific budget. Payment method, sales volume, taxes, add-ons, and unused annual commitment can change the real total.

Source check: Subscription and fee details were checked on July 27, 2026 against Thinkific’s official pricing page and Thinkific’s official cost guide, plus its August 13 pricing-update notice. Fees vary by country, currency, payment method, and plan.

Thinkific’s real cost is the subscription plus payment costs, applicable taxes, optional apps or services, and the cost of committing longer than you use the platform. A useful budget therefore separates fixed platform cost from variable cost per sale.

1. Subscription cost

Thinkific’s pricing-update notice separates rates available through August 12, 2026 from higher rates beginning August 13. Annual billing means paying the year upfront, not paying the lower monthly equivalent one month at a time.

PlanThrough Aug. 12: 12 monthly / annualFrom Aug. 13: 12 monthly / annualAnnounced annual saving
Basic$588 / $432$648 / $475About $173
Start$1,188 / $888$1,308 / $978$330
Grow$2,388 / $1,788$2,628 / $1,968$660

The annual saving matters only if you use the platform for the full period. Four unused months can erase the apparent discount.

2. Payment-processing fees

Selling a course creates payment-processing costs separate from the subscription. Thinkific says a typical US or Canadian card transaction through Thinkific Payments is 2.9% plus $0.30, while exact rates depend on creator country, student location, currency, and payment method.

Digital wallets using stored cards may use the standard rate. Other methods can cost more. Thinkific’s official fee table lists higher rates for some bank redirects, alternative wallets, and buy-now-pay-later transactions. Refunds do not have an added refund fee, but the original processing fees are not returned.

3. Third-party gateway fees

Creators in covered regions who use a third-party processor may pay an additional Thinkific gateway fee on top of the processor’s own charge. Thinkific currently lists 5% on Basic, 2% on Start, 1% on Grow, and 0.5% on Expand for applicable third-party-gateway sales. Thinkific Payments does not incur this additional gateway fee.

This difference can change the best plan at meaningful sales volume. For example, reducing an applicable gateway fee by three percentage points on $5,000 of monthly sales is worth $150 before considering the higher subscription. Confirm availability and current rules for your country before modeling the result.

4. Taxes and cross-border charges

Your Thinkific subscription may have sales tax, VAT, or other taxes added based on location. Because Thinkific is a Canadian company, some card issuers may also apply a small cross-border charge to the subscription. That charge comes from the card provider rather than Thinkific.

On customer sales, Thinkific’s tax solution may create an additional fee where tax is assessed. Tax obligations and platform automation vary by region, so a checkout preview is not a replacement for professional tax advice.

5. Apps, integrations, and operating tools

Thinkific includes hosting, SSL, course delivery, checkout, and core site tools, but your business may still pay for email marketing, live-video software, scheduling, design, analytics, bookkeeping, advanced assessments, or a branded mobile app. The public price for the branded mobile app is $199 per month outside select Plus contracts.

List tools required by the product, not every integration in the app store. A simple self-paced course may need no paid app. A live membership with advanced email automation and scheduling may need several.

Use a realistic cost formula

Estimated monthly cost: subscription equivalent + payment processing + applicable gateway fees + tax-service fees + required apps + outside services.

Run the formula at zero sales, expected sales, and a strong-sales scenario. Then compare Basic, Start, and Grow based on required features and variable fees. Do not count revenue as certain, and do not treat a public coupon code as a saving unless it appears in official checkout with clear eligibility.

For a new creator, monthly billing during validation can be rational even at a higher sticker price. For an established operation, annual billing and the right payment path may lower predictable cost. The cheapest plan is the one that supports the real workflow without avoidable fees or unused capacity.

A simple worked example

Suppose a US creator on Basic sells ten $100 courses in a month through Thinkific Payments after the announced August 13 increase. Using the typical 2.9% plus $0.30 card rate as an illustration, processing would be about $32 before taxes, refunds, international cards, or other payment methods. Add the announced $54 monthly subscription and the starting platform-and-processing total is about $86.

This is not a quote for your account. It shows why sales volume, payment mix, refunds, country, and tax workflow must be entered into the model. Repeat the calculation with your actual average order value and expected payment methods.

Frequently asked questions

Does Thinkific charge transaction fees?

Payment processing applies. An additional third-party gateway fee may also apply by plan and region when using an outside processor; Thinkific Payments avoids that additional gateway fee.

Are taxes included in Thinkific’s public prices?

The public prices do not represent every buyer’s final tax-inclusive total. Taxes can be added according to location.

Does annual Thinkific billing always save money?

It lowers the listed 12-month subscription total, but it can cost more if you stop using the platform before the paid year ends.

Do I need paid apps with Thinkific?

Not necessarily. Core hosting, course delivery, checkout, and site tools are included, but specialized workflows may require outside software or paid add-ons.
